Corporate Memphis is an art style often associated with corporate graphics and advertisements. It is a form of art that exists to fill up space. It is a commercialized, superficial, and sanitized form of human expression; it lacks humanity.
I designed a family photo in Adobe Illustrator to emulate this style. Family photos are something inherently personal. By presenting a family photo in this style I wanted to emphasize the style’s lack of humanity. The Corporate Memphis illustration feels manufactured regardless of its contents. In contrast, the frame is made to appear more human. The hand-decorated frame is covered in beads. Jewelry is an art form that has been tied to human activity for centuries. The frame and the image inside are juxtaposed to create tension between the two objects.
